The following is a sampling of actual personal histories I have published in the Fort Myers News-Press and in corporate newsletters. I cannot, for obvious reasons, share with you the personal histories that were privately commissioned in digital or print form, as short histories or as books. However, in these samples you will discover my style, the voice with which I will tell your story.
You may prefer to tell your story in first person, rather than third. For example, the following paragraph from “Beverley,” which is written in third person—
“On the morning of September 11, 2001, at 39,000 feet, approaching 40 degrees west longitude, Captain Bass had her feet up and was enjoying her lunch when she heard, over her pilot’s special radio frequency, that a plane had hit one of the World Trade towers. Twenty minutes later, she heard that an “American 737” had hit the other tower. Captain Bass’s feet came down. She ordered a lock-down of the cockpit.”—
would read as follows:
“On the morning of September 11, 2001, at 39,000 feet, approaching 40 degrees west longitude, I had my feet up and was enjoying my lunch when I heard, over my pilot’s special radio frequency, that a plane had hit one of the World Trade towers. Twenty minutes later, I heard that an “American 737” had hit the other tower. My feet came down. I ordered a lock-down of the cockpit.”
Don’t worry. We’ll discuss the pros and cons of third versus first person narration when we begin your story.
